Council of Europe, Strasbourg
March 2018
The Council of Europe hosted a solo exhibition of renowned Moldovan artist Andrei Mudrea, presenting new and previously unseen works from his acclaimed series Metamorphosis of Light.
Mudrea was celebrated for his lifelong exploration of light as both subject and metaphor. His paintings revealed shifting states of perception, where layers of vivid colour and dynamic forms created luminous spaces alive with movement and transformation. More than representations of light, these works functioned as meditations on its symbolic force—suggesting truth, hope, and the passage from material to spiritual realms.
Curatorially, the exhibition underscored Mudrea’s ability to fuse tradition with innovation. Rooted in the technical rigour of classical painting yet freed by experimental approaches to texture and form, his canvases embodied a dialogue between permanence and ephemerality. Each composition was both intensely physical—built through colour, surface, and gesture—and profoundly metaphysical, inviting viewers to reflect on the fragility of existence and the constancy of renewal. In this sense, Metamorphosis of Light could be read not only as an artistic cycle, but also as a philosophical statement on art’s power to illuminate human experience.
Organised in partnership with Mudrea.com and the Club des Arts of the Council of Europe, the exhibition offered Strasbourg audiences a rare opportunity to encounter the visionary work of one of Moldova’s most influential and enduring artistic figures.
